Heirloom Farm Studio
North Garden, VA2022 AIA Virginia Award of Honor | Small Projects
2022 World Design Awards Winner | Small Buildings
2022 Architecture MasterPrize Winner | Small Architecture
This small structure is a visual artist’s studio sited within a unique, sustainable community on a working farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia. Situated on the high point between a pasture, an orchard, and an existing cottage, the studio opens to north and west light and distant views. The simple form of the building, minimal and prismatic, distills the Scandinavian barn inspiration into an essential and timeless vernacular. The same dark-stained wood slats, thermally-treated for permanence, are used for both wall and roof, and keep the building’s color palette to an absolute minimum as envisioned by the artist. This structure is happy lurking in the edge-of-field shadows.
