Historic Kitchen Renovation

Charlottesville, VA
Historic Kitchen Renovation Cover Image

Modern connection and historical context. This renovation overhauls the existing kitchen of an historic Charlottesville home, addressing its poor functionality and lack of storage. The new owners, a young family with a school-age daughter, requested a flexible space that works for cooking, homework, informal family dinners, and happy hour socializing. The redesign organizes the kitchen’s functions in a cohesive way and places particular emphasis on openness and connection — all while keeping the space in context with the rest of the 1910 house.

An extended island provides ample working space for two cooks, and also creates a seating area where the family now has breakfast every day. Mid-tone painted cabinets serve as a backdrop for brass accents and light marble countertops, imbuing the space with a warmth reminiscent of a living room meant for gathering and lingering.
