Meadow House

Sited at the wooded edge of a sprawling meadow, Meadow House offers a quiet retreat defined by the interplay between openness and enclosure. Designed as a guest residence on a large family farm, the four-bedroom home — complete with a separate one-bedroom apartment — opens westward to frame distant views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

At the heart of the residence, a central pavilion serves as a year-round gathering space for family and guests. Retractable glass walls on both sides of the main living space take advantage of the region’s temperate climate, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out. The bedroom and apartment wings provide private counterpoints to the gathering area, offering spaces for rest and retreat. The building layout offers easy access to both a protected inner courtyard and expansive views.

An interior material palette of wood, metal, stone, and textured fabrics grounds the interiors in the surrounding landscape. Native plantings define a series of outdoor rooms while supporting the local ecology. Walking paths and views connect Meadow House to Hilltop House, the family’s primary residence nearby. Clad in stained cedar siding and locally sourced stone, Meadow House is both rooted in its setting and responsive to it. The result is a modern yet timeless retreat that reflects the rhythms of rural Virginia living.
